Child Autism and Neurodevelopment Strengths (CANS) Checklist

Our goal was to develop a checklist that could be completed by caregivers at the time of diagnostic assessment and reviewed by clinicians as part of the diagnostic assessment and observation. This checklist can be used to contribute to an integrated strengths-based approach for the diagnostic narrative that meets caregivers’, clinicians’, and children’s needs.

Moving towards a strengths-based approach in diagnostic assessments is a crucial shift, and providing a practical tool like the CANS Checklist is a wonderful contribution to the field. Reading this really underscores the power of a good assessment tool in providing clarity. This process of seeking understanding isn't just for children and their families; it's a journey many adults are now undertaking for themselves, often without the benefit of such modern approaches.
